Job Description

Other Duties/ Responsibilities Learns various delivery routes; lifts and carries/shares weight up to 100 lbs.; sits and walks for extended periods. Participates in COOP exercises. Required Work Experience One to three years of experience driving delivery trucks. Required Special Skills/ Knowledge Must possess a valid driver’s license and safely operate vehicles designated for the position. Ability to obtain pulmonary, X-ray, and respiratory fit certifications. Ability to work in an air-controlled environment while properly donning and doffing personal protective equipment. Knowledge of Microsoft products. Ability to learn basic U.S. Postal Service regulations. Ability to learn and adhere to safety precautions associated with mail facility operations. Ability to operate a hand truck. Must have a clean driving history within SAA hiring guidelines. Ability to effectively communicate with Senate staff and the public when answering questions or fulfilling service requests. As part of our hiring process, we may conduct a skills assessment to better understand an applicant’s proficiency in key areas relevant to the role. Desired Qualifications Knowledge of mailroom operational procedures, including U.S. Postal Service regulations and procedures. At least two years of experience driving oversized delivery trucks to deliver materials, preferably including the operation of forklifts. Possession of a valid driver’s license for at least three years and a good driving record. Ability to obtain and maintain pulmonary, X-ray, and respiratory fit certifications. Ability to work in an air-controlled environment and properly don/doff personal protective equipment. Familiarity with various shipping methods to facilitate effective coordination of deliveries. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, coworkers, and others encountered during the shift. Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing. Ability to follow directives and standard operating procedures. Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple tasks effectively. Ability to learn traffic routes and the locations of government buildings and installations in and around the Washington, D.C., area, as well as navigate confined spaces. Valid forklift certification, with a commitment to maintaining certification. Ability to work outdoors in varied weather conditions. Ability to maintain accurate records. Physical dexterity in the use of fingers, limbs, and body for the operation of hand and motorized equipment. Working Conditions Since this position requires onsite presence in support of the U.S. Senate when in session, this position requires the employee to be available and prepared to work during a lapse in appropriations, in inclement weather, on holidays, and during late-night, overnight, and weekend sessions. In the context of government furloughs, this position is considered excepted. This position directly supports essential services of the U.S. Senate. As such, this position requires that the employee be available and prepared to work during a lapse in appropriations, in inclement weather, on holidays, on weekends, and during late nights to ensure essential services to the Senate continue without interruption. Stands or sits for extended periods of time in a negative air environment. Operates mail and package processing equipment and machinery as needed.
