Job Summary

You will serve as a Security Officer with U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). The position is responsible for managing the USGS Security Management Program and providing oversight of the authority delegated from the USGS Director to the Physical Security Officer; Identity, Credential, and Access Management Officer; and National Security Officer. Salary: $143,913 (Step 01) to $187,093 (Step 10); NOTE: First time hires to the Federal Government are typically hired at the Step 01.

Requirements Continued Driver's License/Driving Record - You will be required to operate a government-owned or -leased vehicle in the performance of your official duties. Applicants for this position must meet the following requirements:(1) possess a valid State license, and (2) possess a safe driving record. If selected, you will be required to provide proof of a valid State license & a copy of your driving record. Prior to appointment, the selectee will be required to take and pass, at Federal expense, a urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use. From thereon, the individual may be subject to random drug testing. Qualifications: All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement - 08/03/2026 - unless otherwise stated in this vacancy announcement. Competitive candidates must also meet Time-in-Grade requirements as defined in 5 CFR 300, Subpart F. For current Federal employees, if hours worked per week are not included on your resume, you must submit a non-award SF-50 as part of your application to be used to validate your work schedule and determine the amount of specialized experience that you will be granted. An award SF-50 will not be acceptable documentation for which to consider your amount of qualifying experience. For periods of time that reflect military service, the DD-214 or Statement of Service is sufficient to meet the work schedule requirement as the service dates will be reflected. For all other applicants who are not current federal employees, your resume must state either "full-time" (or "40 hours a week") or "part-time" with the number of hours worked per week to ensure proper crediting of specialized experience. Applicants must meet the following to qualify for the GS-14 level: One year of specialized experience in or directly related to this position that equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of this position. To be creditable, the required specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the GS-13 level in the Federal service. Examples of GS-13 level work may include: Providing expert level advisory services to leadership, management, and staff in the administration of an occupational management and program; applying an expert level of operational knowledge on a wide variety of security program regulations, policies, and procedures to evaluate complex personnel, physical, and national security programs. This includes developing personnel, physical, and national security policies and procedures with broad bureau impact; experience consulting with senior officials on the impact and application of new and existing legislation and policies. You must include hours per week worked. Volunteer Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
