Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of an Water Treatment Plant Operator without more than normal supervision. Must possess the ability to perform common duties which include duties including the operation of water pumps, checking dry feeders for pH, inspecting chlorinators, operating electric filter valves, and conducting routine laboratory tests. I work under normal supervision of a work leader or journey-level employee who observes tasks in progress and upon completion to make sure they are properly performed- Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating. Ability To Do The Work Of The Position Without More Than Normal Supervision Ability to Interpret Instructions, Specifications, etc. (Other Than Blueprint Reading) Hydrology Knowledge of Equipment Assembly, Installation, Repair, etc. Technical Practices (theoretical, precise, artistic) PHYSICAL EFFORT: Water plant operators do considerable walking, standing on concrete floors, and climbing stairways and ladders. Light to moderate physical effort is necessary to turn valves and controls. They frequently lift and carry items weighing up to 18 kilograms (40 pounds) unassisted, and occasionally lift and carry heavier items with assistance of other workers or with lifting devices. WORKING CONDITIONS: Work is performed both inside and outside; subject to damp, odorous, and varied weather conditions for substantial amount of time; possible infection, asphyxiation, and injury from contact with sewage, and sewage gases and fumes, plant equipment and/or more severe injuries from falls into open tanks. Is exposed to chlorine gas and dusts of lime and alum which may call for protective clothing.
