Job Description
To qualify for an Environmental Protection Specialist, your resume and supporting documentation must support: Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience that equipped you with the particular competencies to successfully perform the duties of the position and is directly in or related to this position. To qualify at the GS-12 level, applicants must possess one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-11 level or equivalent under other pay systems in the Federal service, military, or private sector. Applicants must meet eligibility requirements including minimum qualifications, and any other regulatory requirements by the cut-off/closing date of the announcement. Creditable specialized experience includes: Utilizing environment protection practices and procedures, as well as hazardous material/waste concepts to plan and conduct surveys and evaluate conditions Recommending the application of specific techniques, methods, and procedures to eliminate or control unsafe acts or conditions Reviewing and reconciling records to ensure personnel handling hazardous materials and waste are current with environmental training requirements Assisting in the development and implementation of environmental/safety programs Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, spiritual, community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Physical Demands: The performance of work duties requires frequent surveys of new construction sites and machine shops necessitating prolonged periods of walking, standing, and bending. Work will require walking throughout the warehouses and operational areas. The incumbent may be required to visit any of the outlying areas to perform duties and research data in support of special studies or reviews. Occasional use of ladders and stairs will be required to access elevated operational areas. Work Environment: The work involves regular and recurring exposure to operating machines and equipment, high noise levels, dust, and fumes. Protective equipment and clothing may be necessary. Operational areas include warehouses, machine, electrical, carpentry, paint mechanical, and rigging shops, outdoor spaces, and areas with mechanized material handling equipment. Some exposure to weather is likely during monitoring/surveillance. Employee is required to wear safety clothing and equipment appropriate for the job and work area where assigned, as directed by the supervisor.
