About the Position: Geotechnical Engineer in the Dam & Levee Safety Section. Assignments involve work in a broad range of activities and complex geotechnical engineering functions concerning a variety of Civil Works projects. This position will be located in St. Louis, MO and will allow for situational telework only. This position is NOT eligible for full-time telework.

Basic Requirement for Civil Engineer, GS-0810 In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below: Minimum Qualifications GS-9: Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes using a wide range of professional engineering concepts, principles and practices to complete assigned projects; and performing field investigations and/or laboratory testing, such as monitoring instruments, assessing soil and foundation conditions, and/or analyzing and designing geotechnical features. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the second lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-07). OR Education: Master's or equivalent graduate degree or 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree in a field which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position, such as: Civil or Geotechnical Engineering. OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) beyond the first year (total graduate semester hours minus 18) by 18. Add the two percentages. Minimum Qualifications GS-11: Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes geotechnical engineering coordination with multiple engineering disciplines; performing soils and foundation investigations; supporting risk analysis, design evaluations, and/or assessments of civil works dams, levees, or similar structures; and coordinating or collaborating with others to ensure project completion/success. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the second lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-09). OR Education: Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree or 3 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree in a field which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position, such as: Civil or Geotechnical Engineering. OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) beyond the second year (total graduate semester hours minus 36) by 18. Add the two percentages. Minimum Qualifications GS-12: Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes professional geotechnical engineering experience related to civil works dams, levees, and/or similar structures and their relationship with multiple engineering disciplines; performing soils and foundation investigations and design of such structures; performing and leading risk analysis or evaluations; and coordinating and collaborating with others to ensure project completion/success. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-11). Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job at the GS-12, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted. Time in Grade Requirement for GS-09: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-07).
