About the Position: Serves as Deckhand aboard Detroit District Floating Plant to include survey boats, survey vessels, tugboats and crane or derrick barges engaged in maintenance of waterways.

Who May Apply: US Citizens Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. There is no specific length of training or experience required. However, you must be able to demonstrate, through experience shown in your written application materials that you possess the sufficient knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the work of this position without more than normal supervision. Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a(n) DECKHAND ~ without more than normal supervision. I have the ability to perform some tasks including the majority of the following duties under close supervision: the ability to perform the full range of duties of a Deckhand, in situations that require more than ordinarily skills and care, with close supervision such as making minor repairs of machinery, handles roping for towing, utilizes various tools, prepares paint surfaces to be painted. Operates small boats. Keeps lines, tools, paint brushes, etc clean and in proper places. - Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating. PHYSICAL EFFORTS Work requires sustained physical effort when washing, scrubbing, cleaning and painting surfaces and while handling lines, making, and breaking tows. The incumbent walks, climbs, and stands for prolonged periods of time. The worker frequently lifts and carries moderately heavy objects (up to50 lbs. or more, such as, tools, material, and supplies). WORKING CONDITIONS Work is performed both indoors and outside in all types of weather. Workers are exposed to paint fumes and are subject to cuts and bruises while working with equipment and making machinery repairs in a cramped or confined machinery spaces. There is also exposure to eye injuries while chipping paint and rust. There is the ever-present danger of drowning, in the event of a storm or collision.
