Job Summary

The full performance, Emergency Department (ED) Intermediate Care Technician (ICT) is assigned to the Department of Veteran Affairs, Veterans Health Administration (VHA). This position serves as an advanced technician for the ED for patients who are present for treatment.

Job Description

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 09/04/2026. Individual Occupational Requirement: Candidates must meet the following as well as the specialized experience in the next section. Specialized Experience (for positions at GS-4 and above): Positions in this series range widely in type and include support duties to medical or health personnel such as audiologists, speech pathologists, medical officers, and optometrists. Therefore, technician experience is experience that required application of the knowledge, methods, and techniques of the position to be filled. In addition to the above Individual Occupational Requirement, you must meet the specialized experience as described below: Specialized Experience: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-06 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience include: taking vital signs and performing 12-lead EKGs inserting IVs and foley catheters; using point-of-care devices like the Abbott I-STAT and glucometer; setting up equipment and surgical instrumentation (e.g., chest tube insertion, sterile field setup); providing observations and interventions such as oxygen therapy and splinting; performing wound care (bandaging, dressings, measuring wounds); collecting and preparing specimens (venous blood, mucous samples); providing geriatric care (screening for depression and elder abuse, consults, follow-ups, fall prevention, ambulation); assisting with patient exams and screenings (gynecology, confusion assessment); transporting patients and supporting cardiac monitoring; and monitoring cardiovascular status at the bedside or central station.
