This position serves as an Air Conditioning Equipment Mechanic within the Facilities Management at the VA Health Care Center St. Cloud, MN. The Air Conditioning Equipment Mechanic is responsible for installing, troubleshooting, performing preventative maintenance and repairing all HVAC&R (heating, ventilating, air conditioning and refrigeration) equipment and controls.

SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. Examples of qualifying related experience include but are not limited to: Performs maintenance and repair to air conditioning units, air handling units, walk-in coolers, ice making machines, refrigerated tray carts, and such other equipment and/or systems as may be assigned. Makes regularly scheduled preventive maintenance inspections on a recurring basis of air conditioning, refrigeration and air handling equipment, including electronic and pneumatic controls located throughout the VA Campus. Incumbent is responsible for the maintenance and repair of ice machines and water fountains. Possess the skills to identify repairs needed to all system components such as: compressors, motors, belts, condensers, cooling coils, receivers, fans, piping, valves, controls, pumps, and air filters. Responsible for the window air conditioning unit maintenance and repair (seasonal work). Assists in the installation of the above equipment and associated systems. NOTE: This is the same language that you used in the assessment for Q1. SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT #2: In accordance with Section 608 of the Clean Air Act, this position requires a current Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) approved Universal Certification. Applicants who do not meet this requirement are ineligible for further consideration. Preferred Experience: Experience working with air conditioning equipment to include split-systems, window air conditioning, reclaim evacuation, recharge system, and solder/braze. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Physical Requirements: Occasionally may lift objects weighing up to 50 pounds. Work is performed from ladders, scaffolding, and platforms. Occasionally required to work from an aerial lift platform in hard-to-reach places. Includes physical exertion related to actions such as lifting, pushing, pulling or carrying objects of varying weights, sizes and shapes; and physical effort related to movements such as walking, running, climbing, crawling and bending. Possible exposure to strain related to lack of movement such as standing in place, crouching or stooping for extended periods off time. Working Conditions: May occasionally be exposed to hazards such as moving objects, elevation changes, electrical conductors, operating machinery and high or low temperatures. Subject to injuries such as cuts, bumps, shock, falls, bruises, etc. Inside work may be dusty, noisy, and dirty. Work is also performed outside and may be performed in inclement weather. All work is to be done per VA Safety Guidelines utilizing PPE requirements. Incumbent is required to be familiar with proper safety precautions when working in patient rooms or areas where infections or contagious diseases may exist.
