Job Summary

This position is located in Care Navigation/Community Care service at the Chillicothe VA Medical Center. The Lead Medical Support Assistant (MSA) is responsible for daily workload assessments, assigning work, and assuring proper staffing coverage; evaluating training records; and determining training needs of MSAs to provide support across interdisciplinary settings

Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Education: High school diploma or transcript (including homeschooling), General Education Development (GED) certificate, Proficiency certificate issued by a State or Territorial Board or Department of Education, Post-high school education. Physical Requirements: The work is primarily sedentary, although some walking, bending and light lifting may be required. The incumbent is located at an on-site location in a typical office setting within Care Navigation Center. The work area is adequately lighted, heated, and ventilated. English Language Proficiency: Candidates must be proficient in spoken and written English in accordance with 38 U.S.C. § 7403(f). May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria). Grade Determinations: To qualify for the GS-07 level, you must have one year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level GS-6. Experience at the GS-6 includes but is not limited to: setting priorities and deadlines, adjusting the flow and sequencing of the work to meet team and patient needs; coordinates with the patient care team to review clinic appointment availability (utilization) to ensure that clinic schedules are closely monitored to effectively support the needs of the clinics, and makes adjustments as necessary; develops and/or maintains effective and efficient communication with the patient, interdisciplinary coordinated care delivery model teams, medical centers, and other agencies (e.g., assist with communications during the inpatient to outpatient discharge; prepares correspondence to notify patients of normal lab results; manage a system for follow-up care such as consults, tests, etc.); and, monitors pre-appointment information and/or requirements to assure readiness for patient visit/procedure. In addition to the experience above, the candidate must demonstrate the following Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Advanced knowledge of medical terminology and a wide range of clinical flow processes relating to access to care across multiple clinics, specialties, and/or community. Skill in communicating with individuals to obtain the desired effect and coordinating with a variety of interdisciplinary care team staff. Ability to utilize numerous advanced patient systems in support of multiple clinics in an interdisciplinary setting. Ability to organize work, set priorities, and delegate tasks/responsibilities in order to meet deadlines. Ability to provide staff development and training. Ability to manage staffing requirements, manage workflow priorities, and adjust the flow of work to meet team and patient needs. This includes the ability to follow-up on pending issues and demonstrate an understanding of the impact of incomplete work across multiple clinics.
