Job Summary
The incumbent serves as a Lead Medical Support Assistant in the Health Administration Service (HAS). The LMSA provides specialized and expert administrative patient support while working collaboratively in an interdisciplinary coordinated care delivery model. Work involves specialized administrative judgment and the flexible use of a wide range of clinical flow processes relating to access to care across multiple clinics, specialties, and/or care in the community resources.

High school diploma, General Education Development equivalency certificate, or proficiency certificate from a State or territorial-level Board or Department of Education. Candidates must be proficient in spoken and written English in accordance with 38 U.S.C. § 7403(f). May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria). Grade Determinations: Lead Medical Support Assistant, GS-7 Experience. One year of experience equivalent to the GS-6 grade level. Preferred Experience: 1 year of administrative/office experience utilizing computerized program/databases that indicates the ability to acquire the knowledge and skills needed to perform the duties of the position. Advanced knowledge of medical terminology. Ability to operate computerized programs and systems to enter, modify, and retrieve sensitive medical and patient identifying information (PII) into or from electronic [health] records, scheduling systems, and/or reports. Ability to schedule medical appointments in a clinical setting. Advanced knowledge of health care processes as it relates to access to care.
