Job Summary

This position is part of the Prosthetic Treatment Center (PTC) within the Prosthetics & Sensory Aids Service, located within the Central Texas Veterans Health Care System (CTVHCS). This healthcare system has an active outpatient treatment program and includes, but not limited to, Audiology & Speech Pathology, Visual Impairment Service Team, Spinal Cord Injury, Rehabilitation Medicine, Blind Rehabilitation Service, Medical services, Surgical Service, Ophthalmology, and Orthopedic Services.

Job Description

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 03/17/2026. You may qualify based on your experience and/or education as described below: Specialized Experience: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-04 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to; Thorough knowledge of Prosthetic/orthotic processes, rules and regulations on eligibility and entitlements; Receive and direct calls and visitors; Determine visitor's eligibility and entitlement for the medical items and or services; Assists visitors with the completion of forms or documents necessary to obtain medial items and or services; Utilizing complex technical computer systems of records to obtain patient medical information, appointment scheduling, determine medical benefits, etc. OR, Education: Applicants may substitute education for the required experience. To qualify based on education for this grade level you must have four full academic years of successfully completed education above the high school level. OR, Combination: Applicants may also combine education and experience to qualify at this level. You must have a combination of specialized experience and education. For GS-5 level positions only education in excess of the first 60 semester hours (i.e., beyond the second year) is creditable toward meeting the specialized experience requirement. One full academic year of study (30 semester hours) beyond the second year is equivalent to 6 months of specialized experience. You will be rated on the following Competencies for this position: Clerical Customer Service Standards Computer Skills Interpersonal Effectiveness Preferred Experience: Government Experience CPRS experience Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Physical Requirements: The work is somewhat sedentary. Typically, the employee sits comfortably to do the work. However, there is some physical exertion such as walking, standing, bending, crouching, stooping, and reaching, as incumbent is regularly involved in stocking and retrieving prosthetic/orthotic items. Functional Requirements: Individuals, including wage-grade drivers, title 5, title 38, and hybrid title 38 employees or volunteers who are required to operate a government owned or leased vehicle to successfully carry out their assigned duties must be medically cleared prior to appointment (positions that require a CDL are covered under a separate OF-178). Assessment must be made for any acute or chronic medical/physical condition or medication use which interferes with the ability operate the appropriate Government-owned or -leased vehicle safely and without undue risk to themselves or others. The following requirements must be met: distant vision 20/40 in one eye with or without correction, field of vision 70 degrees, ability to distinguish red, green and amber, whispered voice at five feet, or average hearing loss of not greater than 40 dbs. at 500, 1000 and 2,000 Hz.
