Job Summary

This position is located at the Veterans Affairs (VA) Durham Health Care System in Durham, North Carolina. The purpose of this position is to operate patient transport vehicles, including emergency vehicles, patient transport vans/buses and other types transport vehicles, capable of carrying up to 8 or more passengers, to and from VA Medical Center facilities, private healthcare facilities, and other private sector areas like patient homes, railway, bus stations and airports.

Job Description

Driver's License Requirement: Must possess a valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with passenger endorsement to operate a motor vehicle. (Please do not submit a copy of your license with your application package. You will be required to show your valid commercial driver's license at the time of your interview.) Physical Requirements: The work requires climbing in and out of vehicles, moderate to heavy physical effort when loading and unloading patients and driving long hours. Must be physically sound and have good coordination of eyes, hands, feet, and vision and depth perception; must be mentally alert to traffic hazards and dangers of the highway. Considerable physical effort may be required to change tires and make limited emergency repairs, such as installing an emergency fan belt or replacing an electrical fuse on open highways. Working Conditions: You will be required to operate vehicles in all types of traffic and weather on public roads (or the equivalent), and is exposed to the danger of serious accidents; drive in heavy traffic and at highway speeds over complicated road and interchange systems. You may be exposed to dirt and fumes, and to the possibility of cuts, bruises, and broken bones as a result of accidents while driving. May also be exposed to patients with all types of diseases, viruses, etc. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualifications. Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element (WG-2 and higher only; screen-outs are not applicable to WG-1). Applicants who appear to meet the screen out element are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated from consideration. The potential eligibles are rated against the remainder of the job elements. While a specific length of training and experience is not required, your responses to the questionnaire must be supported by detailed descriptions of your experience on your resume. All experience listed on your resume must include the month and year start/end dates. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities.
