Job Summary

This position is located in the Engineering Service at the VA Medical Center in Bath, NY. The Maintenance Mechanic is responsible for the installation, maintenance, and repair of architectural, components of buildings requiring the use of a variety of trades and practices.

PHYSICAL EFFORT AND WORK CONDITIONS: The work requires frequent lifting and carrying heavy materials and parts weighing in excess of 40 pounds with occasional lifting up to 90 pounds. Incumbent works off of scaffolding, ladders, and other raised devices. Other requirements include walking, standing, crawling, reaching, kneeling, bending, pushing and pulling. The incumbent will frequently work in uncomfortable and awkward positions. Work requires repetitive motions such as troweling concrete or drywall mud. Work is performed inside and outside (heat, cold, under and outside of building). Installations, inspections and repairs are made under dirty, noisy and odorous producing conditions. Exposed to fall risk from ladders or scaffolds and is frequently exposed to the danger of strains, cuts, bruises, burns and infection. Wears standard personal protective equipment including eye protection, hearing protection, steel-toe boots, and gloves. Incumbent is required to wear respiratory protection due to dust and dirt generation or other exposures. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualifications.
