Job Summary

This position is located in the Engineering Service at the VA Medical Center in Bath, NY. The Maintenance Mechanic is responsible for the installation, maintenance, and repair of architectural, components of buildings requiring the use of a variety of trades and practices.

Job Description

PHYSICAL EFFORT AND WORK CONDITIONS: The work requires frequent lifting and carrying heavy materials and parts weighing in excess of 40 pounds with occasional lifting up to 90 pounds. Incumbent works off of scaffolding, ladders, and other raised devices. Other requirements include walking, standing, crawling, reaching, kneeling, bending, pushing and pulling. The incumbent will frequently work in uncomfortable and awkward positions. Work requires repetitive motions such as troweling concrete or drywall mud. Work is performed inside and outside (heat, cold, under and outside of building). Installations, inspections and repairs are made under dirty, noisy and odorous producing conditions. Exposed to fall risk from ladders or scaffolds and is frequently exposed to the danger of strains, cuts, bruises, burns and infection. Wears standard personal protective equipment including eye protection, hearing protection, steel-toe boots, and gloves. Incumbent is required to wear respiratory protection due to dust and dirt generation or other exposures. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualifications. For this position, the job element method is used to match what you, the applicant, can do against what the work calls for. Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element (WG-2 and higher only; screen-outs are not applicable to WG-1). Applicants who appear to meet the screen out element are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated from consideration. The potential eligibles are rated against the remainder of the job elements. While a specific length of training and experience is not required, your responses to the questionnaire must be supported by detailed descriptions of your experience on your resume. You will be rated on the following Job Elements as part of the assessment questionnaire for this position: Ability to Interpret Instructions, Specifications, etc. (Includes Blueprint Reading) Ability to Use and Maintain Tools and Equipment Knowledge of Equipment Assembly, Installation, and Repair, etc. Knowledge of Materials Technical Practices (Theoretical, Precise, Artistic) Without more than normal supervision IMPORTANT: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. All experience listed on your resume must include the month and year start/end dates. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities.
