The primary purpose of this position is to serve as a Sewing Machine Operator supporting the Laundry Plant at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson (JBER) and Fort Wainwright hospitals, Lodging, Fort Greely, Alaska as well as locations documented via support agreements, which include Clear Air Force Station AK, Navy, Eielson AFB (North Pole, Alaska) and the Coast Guard.

In order to qualify, you must meet the quality level of experience requirements described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards Handbook X-118C. QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Qualification Standard Handbook X-118C for the WG-3100, Fabric and Leather Work Group. Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most blue-collar positions, you must meet any screen-out element listed, and show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying. Qualification requirements emphasis is on the quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time. The screen out element for this position is the ability to do the work of a SEWING MACHINE OPERATOR without more than normal supervision. JOB ELEMENTS: Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas: 1\. Knowledge of and the ability to set up and run a variety of domestic and industrial type power operated sewing machines and related special purpose machines such as buttonhole, basting and feed-off the arm machines sufficient to sew, alter, or repair wearing apparel, linens, blankets, and other fabric articles. 2\. Knowledge of a variety of sewing methods and processes (i.e., blind stitching hems in woolen trousers or topstitching chevrons on uniforms, replacing zippers in field jackets or sleeping bags; matching materials in patching faded wearing apparel). 3\. Knowledge of established safety regulations, policies, and procedure. 4\. Skilled in sewing and fabrication of varying textiles and fabrics used by the military. 5\. Ability to perform operator maintenance on sewing machines. Ability to read and write in English. 6\. Ability to operate a computer. Employee will need basic computer skills sufficient to learn how to use the Point of Sales computer program. PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week. VOLUNTEER WORK EXPERIENCE: Refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service Programs (i.e., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student and social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge and skills that can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. PHYSICAL EFFORT: Operators sit for long periods with continual" movement of hands, arms, and fingers in placing items in position and sewing. They handle lightweight items up to 5 kilograms (10 pounds) continually, and occasionally they handle items up to 14 kilograms (30 pounds). WORKING CONDITIONS: The work is performed inside in well lighted and ventilated areas. Work area is often these areas are noisy because numerous machines are operating at one time. Operators are subject to possible needle punctures and minor thread cuts as well as bruises from carts and machinery.
