Job Description
Basic Requirements: This position has an Individual Occupational Requirement which requires either an Education Requirement in addition to at least one year of Specialized Experience or substitution of education for experience in order to be found minimally qualified. You MUST meet the following requirements: EDUCATION: You must meet this education requirement or the Experience requirement below it to meet the Basic (IOR) requirement for this position Undergraduate and Graduate Education: Major study -- navigation, mathematics, physics, astronomy, geography, meteorology, engineering, cartography, or other subjects related to aeronautical or marine navigation and operations. Graduation from the United States Naval, Air Force, Coast Guard, or Merchant Marine academies, or from one of the State maritime academies meets the undergraduate education requirements. Successful completion of a course of flying or air navigation at one of the U.S. Government (Air Force, Navy, etc.) aeronautical or aviation training schools may be credited at the rate of 1 year of full-time training for 9 months of general experience. Any time-equivalent combination of the above. OR EXPERIENCE: You must meet the education requirement above or the Experience requirement below to meet the Basic (IOR) requirement for this position Navigating and sea experience as a licensed Merchant Marine Officer on U.S. ocean-going vessels (over 1,000 gross tons), or as a commissioned officer on an ocean-going vessel of the United States Government with assigned duties as a navigator. Experience in preparing books or courses on marine navigational information, experience as an instructor on navigational subjects, or other related experience. AND (in addition to EITHER of the above Education or Experience requirement) To qualify at the GS-09 grade level, your resume must demonstrate at least one (1) full year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-07 grade level in the federal sector. Specialized experience is experience that has equipped you with the ability, skill, and knowledge to successfully perform the duties of this position and is typically in or related to this line of work. Examples of specialized experience include performing the following types of tasks on a regular basis. Working knowledge of Aids to Navigation equipment, hardware and power systems, Knowledge of aid positioning and private navigation aids as they affect boating safety and the needs of a geographic area Knowledge of marine-related agencies and organizations whose missions relate to aids to navigation functions Use of electronic navigation charts and river maps including the use of electronic plotting and the use of chart plotting tools and measurement tables.
